Our Origin Story

Hey, thanks for wanting to learn more about Seven Nomads, we appreciate that!

First things first, this is a small sibling-owned and operated company. We’re Sarah and Matt Seveney, and we’ve always had a dream of starting a business together. It used to be a bar, or dive shop, or hostel on a beach somewhere, but nothing seemed like quite the right fit. Then one day Sarah put one of her tattoo flash designs on a shirt, and everything fell into place. We’ve named our business Seven Nomads, and we design casual clothing for people who love tattoo-inspired fashion. At the moment it’s just t-shirts and tanks, but we’ll also have hoodies, maybe bomber jackets, beanies, snap-backs, and whatever else we feel like adding. We’re officially launching Seven Nomads at the end of the summer, and we’re pretty psyched about it!

So, what’s the name about? It’s a nod to our last name (Seveney), and to the lifestyles we’ve each cultivated for ourselves. We’re travel junkies. Both of us really loved going on family roadtrips back in the day, and nothing’s changed. We have a strong sense of adventure, and hate being tied down to one place for too long. For Sarah, it really started the first time she went abroad, a two-week trip to Italy back in undergrad. After she finished her degree, she made travelling a full-time thing, living and working abroad in places like South Korea, Hong Kong, Nepal, the Dominican Republic, etc.

While Sarah was living in Hong Kong, she connected Matt with the same company. He came out to HK, we shared a cool apartment in the Yau Ma Tei district, partied our faces off, and it was a new beginning for him. After that, Matt became as travel-obsessed as Sarah. Matt now works jobs that allow him to travel pretty often, and has probably been to more places than Sarah at this point. At the moment, we’re both kind of home-free…one of us (Matt) has a futon in a garage where he rebuilds classic American muscle cars during his time off. The other (Sarah) lives in her van full time, and takes more road trips than ever, when she’s not tattooing in Philly or New Haven, CT.

So in short, Seven Nomads is a kind of culmination of those life experiences. It’s about freedom…freedom of expression, freedom of movement, freedom of spirit. We want this brand to reflect our values and our aesthetic, and for it to be a way to keep travelling, meeting and connecting with people, and having amazing life experiences. Matt is handling more of the business part of it, and Sarah’s the one-person art department. The shirt designs are custom, and tattoo-art inspired. A few of them are shown here, modeled by our friends and us.
